So having said, as one from sad dismay

Reforted, and after thoughts disturbd

Submitting to what seemd remediless,

Thus in calm mood his Words to Eve he turnd. [ 920 ]

Bold deed thou hast presumd, adventrous Eve

And peril great provokt, who thus hath dard

Had it been onely coveting to Eye

That sacred Fruit, sacred to abstinence,

Much more to taste it under bao touch. [ 925 ]

But past who recall, or don undoe?

Not God Omnipotent, nor Fate, yet so

Perhaps thou shalt not Die, perhaps the Fact

Is not so hainous now, foretasted Fruit,

Profand first by the Serpent, by him first [ 930 ]

Made on and unhallowd ere our taste;

Nor yet on him found deadly, he yet lives,

Lives, as thou saidst, and gaio live as Man

Higher degree of Life, i strong

To us, as likely tasting to attaine [ 935 ]

Proportional ast, which ot be

But to be Gods, els Demi-gods.

Nor I think that God, Creator wise,

Though threatning, will in ear so destroy
